Why Venice Is My Default for Almost Everything AI

· 3 min read

I pay for fewer AI services every month. Venice is replacing them one by one.

I use it for almost anything AI related. After months of daily use I'm still a happy customer.

One subscription, all the models #

Every available model, open-weight and frontier, behind one API and one clean interface. Pick a model per task, move on.

Hard reasoning problem? Frontier model. Prefer open-weight? Also there. Switching costs nothing, so I actually experiment instead of settling.

Where it fits in my day #

Chat. Web interface when browsing, app the rest of the time. It replaced the tab I kept open with a certain large provider's chatbot. I don't miss the tab.

Images and video. Images when something needs a picture. Video when I want to test a visual idea before sinking real time into it. Quality has gone up a lot since I started, video especially.

Agents. Most of my coding work runs through Pi now. Point it at Venice's endpoint, paste the key, done. It doesn't care which model sits underneath, as long as it's fast and reliable. It is.

Categorisation. Jev is a TypeSafe model that doesn't generate text. State in, typed decisions with probabilities out, in a few hundred milliseconds. Outputs are defined in advance, so it can't make a type error. Venice hosts it as jev-latest. I use it to classify notes, links, the usual digital debris. Faster and cheaper than prompting a regular LLM.

Transcription. Mostly local inference. Free, private, and the machine is right there. OpenWhispr for voice input, Venice when I need more than the laptop can run.

Privacy is the actual feature #

This is what made me loyal.

Most providers treat your conversations as raw material. Training data, telemetry, "product improvement". Your prompts are the price of admission.

Venice is explicit about the opposite. Your history never leaves your device. Requests pass through their proxy without being stored. Every model sits in one of four privacy modes.

Trade-offs are stated too. E2EE means no web search, no memory, slower responses. That honesty is why I believe the rest.

So I stopped doing a privacy audit before every paste. I just paste.

The honest caveats #

A review with no downsides is an advertisement. So:

None of it made me reach for something else.

The bottom line #

Chat, images, video, agents, categorisation, transcription. One API key, one bill, every model, and privacy I don't have to think twice about.

Tired of one tool per task? Give it a look. That's my referral link: you get $10 of free credit, and so do I. I'm a happy user either way. Happy enough to write this.
